There are mounting indications that the Trump administration may be preparing for military action against Cuba, with reported options ranging from targeted missile and drone strikes to a larger-scale air assault involving thousands of U.S. troops. Whether or not these reports ultimately prove accurate, they warrant urgent public and congressional scrutiny in light of recent reconnaissance missions and naval operations in the Caribbean, repeated threats by President Trump and Secretary Rubio, the designation of Cuba as an “unusual and extraordinary threat” to U.S. national security, and a series of obscure polls, confounding reports and political narratives that appear designed to build support for military escalation.
After more than seven months of a de facto oil blockade —and following the Trump administration’s unprecedented expansion of extraterritorial secondary sanctions— on top of six decades of embargo, ordinary Cubans are facing a deep humanitarian crisis marked by prolonged blackouts, shortages of food, medicines, electricity, and clean water, and the continued deterioration of essential public services that has resulted in a sharp increase of preventable deaths. This devastating situation must not be used to justify a military action disguised as a humanitarian intervention.
